The utility PCX2FTD is an excellent little utility created by
Darrin Hurd (dphurd@tpnet.co.nz). Thanks for all your efforts
Darrin.

Recently I have been messing about quite a bit with this program,
here are my notations which may help others, and myself in the
near future when I forget just what the heck I did to make things
work out correctly.

The PCX graphic should be of course a type of elevation map.

You can get all of these you want if you manage to get an older DOS/
Windows program called Vistapro 3. (There is probably a modern day
counterpart).

With VistaPro 3, you can render beautiful landscapes, either random,
or real from a variety of input sources including DEM (primarly),
PCX, and others. The program on CD comes with a huge group of DEMs
for the US as well as the complete DEM data base for Mars.

So, from Vistapro 3 (VP3), you can get your source pic.

Within VP3, save out a covert out a DEM>PCX with a highly detailed
output. The size of the file will be 258 x 258 pixels.

This image should be edited in a paint editor and the base or sea
color change to black or color 0.

Next in the Image editor you should crop what you like out of the
PCX in a 110 x 110 pixel chunk. Save this again as a PCX make sure
you stay with the 256 color format.
